The Front Page Is Yours
Last week I gave a keynote at a conference of business professionals. After my forty-minute talk, there was time for a few questions. The second question concerned the application of social media to training. The ‘training’ market is something I’m not at all familiar with. At that moment, I stumbled. My mouth opened and closed a few times, but no sounds came out. I was flummoxed.
At just that point, several hands went up in the audience. Although I wanted to answer the question, the microphone moved along to someone who said, “I’ve been using social media for training…”, and then provided some wonderfully useful information for the original questioner. The microphone moved along to the next person, and that one, too, had something to add about social media in training. The third and fourth, as well. That morning I got a lesson I should have learned long ago: when you don’t have the answer, share the question.
Two weeks ago we kicked off with well-laid plan that I hoped might lead us to some answers. That plan didn’t survive its encounter with the community who have formed around Share This Course! That isn’t a sign of failure. It is, in fact, a sign of success. But it means plans are going to change.
We will not be going on hiatus from the 14th of December until the 4th of January. Breaking stride right now would be a huge mistake. Yes, I will be going on holidays. But the rest of you will be here, carrying on as you have – magnificently – these past two weeks. All of you who have posted regularly now have privileges which allow you to create your own front-page posts. No more lurking in the comment threads. Dream up something to say, and share it with us. On the front page. It’s yours now.

Excellent! I can’t wait to see what people have to say! I’m bogged down with exams in the next two weeks, so my input will be minimal. I will still check in every day though.

I too have been studying like mad for my more formal education, but my first (and last) exam was today so, back to work we go!

Just think that since November 21st we have collectively posted about 60,000 words, which is about 4,000 words a day…

On the cusp of “knowing that I do not know”, new possibilities open up. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn and as such, is both humbling and empowering – for the individual as well as the community.
